Bastogne: Band of Brothers

Band of Brothers

Inspired by Dr. Stephen Ambrose’s bestselling book and the successful HBO series Band of Brothers, many people travel the world following the footsteps of Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment in the European Theatre of Operations. Walking the steps of Easy Company in Bastogne is a unique experience. Standing in their foxholes, following their actions and movements and hearing the personal accounts is a real highlight for every WWII enthusiast.

I highly recommend

Frank Gubbels

‘It is my job to keep the efforts alive of the Allied soldiers during World War 2 and to pass on their stories to the next generations, so the world will never forget the men of the Greatest Generation.’

In 1994 a 50th anniversary military parade through the then twelve year old Frank’s hometown featured a number American veterans and triggered his interest in WWII History.

Freed by the 30th Infantry Division on 12 September 1944, Noorbeek became the first Dutch municipality to be liberated during the second world war. Inspired by the local actions of the ‘Old Hickory’ -Division and his ambition to keep the memory of the American soldiers alive, Frank has now become an expert in his field and the go-to guy in Noorbeek.

After years of research, Frank and his team identified Roy Booher as the first American soldier to be killed during the liberation of the Netherlands. A wonderful memorial dedicated to S/Sgt Booher from K Co, 119 Reg 30th Inf Div, now stands where this brave man died .

Living near the American Military Cemeteries of Margraten (NL) and Henri Chapelle (BEL), Frank Gubbels has adopted several graves taking care of these fallen heroes and making sure that they will never be forgotten by developing a fantastic presentation covering the Adoption Program.

The popular HBO series Band of Brothers also served to motivate Frank to learn more about the 101st Airborne Division and consequently other units in WWII. For many years, Frank has walked the Bastogne battlefields with veterans of the Screaming Eagles, Easy Company and their families to document their actions, movements, inside stories and personal accounts.

When I am unavailable, I highly recommend Frank to lead you in the footsteps of Easy Company around Bastogne.
